Since 1966, Jerry Adamson at the Rocking J Ranch
has been quietly swimming against the current of the American
Cattle Industry, producing cattle that the industry refused to
recognize and even scoffed at -- crosses from the Chianina.
This program works because calves by Rocking J Chianina and
Chi-Cross bulls wean heavy. Adamson's own weaning weights
from his extensive
herd of commercial cows were in the 600 pound range even out
of some cows he describes as "pretty ranchy". They
feed efficiently, gain rapidly and reach slaughter weights
from 13
to 18 months of age. They hang up a carcass that grades consistently
High Select or better and makes money for the rancher, the
feeder
and the packer.
This
was proven in the premier Value Based Marketing study ever made
by the industry, the NCA's Strategic Alliances Project. In that
unbiased demonstration, a load of Rocking J Chicross steers were
by far the most profitable load of cattle in the entire demonstration
generating a profit of $171.54 per head while the balance of 1,253
head averaged $63.78. The Rocking J steers were nearly three times
as profitable as the others.
Rocking J Ranch is far from a one-man operation. It is an operation
in which the entire Adamson family is involved in. Jerry and his
wife Deloris, along with all of their children take an active role
in the operation of the Rocking J Ranch, each with definite duties
that range in active management, to cattle work, record keeping,
and marketing.
